Tashi GYELTSHEN
Director, producer, screenwriter
Gyeltshen started as a journalist for Bhutan's national newspaper Kuensel and later as an editor of a private newspaper, the Bhutan Times, before becoming an autodidact filmmaker. Equally passionate about poetry, his poems have been published in several magazines. A self-taught filmmaker, Gyeltshen learnt the art of filmmaking largely by reading and watching films extensively.
His first short film, GIRL WITH A RED SKY (2009) was commissioned by UNICEF and the Youth Development Fund Bhutan. In 2010, he won the Best Screenplay Award at the Bhutan’s National Film Awards for his SEM GI JURWA. In 2011 he also wrote and directed a documentary TAEKWONDO IN BHUTAN. His third short THE RED DOOR (2014), premiered in Rotterdam International Film Festival.
THE RED PHALLUS is his first feature, recipient of the Open Doors Grant at the Open Doors Hub, Locarno Film Festival 2016, Switzerland.
